Paper & Glam Book Club 2015

Today we discuss our monthly reads for 2015!

Are you ready to turn some pages together this year? Let's talk titles.

Paper & Glam Book Club - January - #Girlboss

JANUARY

#Girlboss

Publication Date: May 6th, 2014

Page Count: 256

From the Publisher: Sophia Amoruso spent her teens hitchhiking, committing petty theft, and dumpster diving. By twenty-two, she had resigned herself to employment, but was still broke, directionless, and working a mediocre day job she’d taken for the health insurance.

Eight years later, she is the founder, CEO, and creative director of Nasty Gal, a $100 million plus online fashion retailer with more than 350 employees. Sophia’s never been a typical CEO, or a typical anything, and she’s written #GIRLBOSS for outsiders (and insiders) seeking a unique path to success, even when that path is winding as all hell and lined with naysayers.

#GIRLBOSS proves that being successful isn’t about how popular you were in high school or where you went to college (if you went to college). Rather, success is about trusting your instincts and following your gut, knowing which rules to follow and which to break.

Paper & Glam Book Club - February - Not That Kind of Girl

FEBRUARY

Not That Kind of Girl

Publication Date: September 30th, 2014

Page Count: 265

From the Publisher: From the acclaimed creator, producer, and star of HBO's Girls comes a hilarious, wise, and fiercely candid collection of personal essays that establishes Lena Dunham as one of the most original young talents writing today.

In Not that Kind of Girl, Dunham illuminates the experiences that are part of making one's way in the world: falling in love, feeling alone, being ten pounds overweight despite eating only health food, having to prove yourself in a room full of men twice your age, finding true love, and, most of all, having the guts to believe that your story is one that deserves to be told.

Paper & Glam Book Club - March Yes Please

MARCH

Yes, Please

Publication Date: October 28th, 2014

Powered by Amy’s charming and hilarious, biting yet wise voice, Yes Please is a book is full of words to live by.

Paper & Glam Book Club - April - The Woman I Wanted To Be

 APRIL

The Woman I Wanted To Be

Publication Date: October 28th, 2014

Page Count: 256

From the Publisher: One of the most influential, admired, and innovative women of our time: fashion designer, philanthropist, wife, mother, and grandmother, Diane von Furstenberg offers a book about becoming the woman she wanted to be.

Diane von Furstenberg started out with a suitcase full of jersey dresses and an idea of who she wanted to be—in her words, “the kind of woman who is independent and who doesn’t rely on a man to pay her bills.” She has since become that woman, establishing herself as a global brand and a major force in the fashion industry, all the while raising a family and maintaining “my children are my greatest creation.”

In The Woman I Wanted to Be, von Furstenberg reflects on her extraordinary life—from childhood in Brussels to her days as a young, jet-set princess, to creating the dress that came to symbolize independence and power for an entire generation of women. With remarkable honesty and wisdom, von Furstenberg mines the rich territory of what it means to be a woman. She opens up about her family and career, overcoming cancer, building a global brand, and devoting herself to empowering other women, writing, “I want every woman to know that she can be the woman she wants to be.”

Paper & Glam Book Club - March - The One & Only

 JULY

The One & Only

Publication Date:  May 20th, 2014

Page Count: 432

From the Publisher: Thirty-three-year-old Shea Rigsby has spent her entire life in Walker, Texas—a small college town that lives and dies by football, a passion she unabashedly shares. Raised alongside her best friend, Lucy, the daughter of Walker’s legendary head coach, Clive Carr, Shea was too devoted to her hometown team to leave. Instead she stayed in Walker for college, even taking a job in the university athletic department after graduation, where she has remained for more than a decade.

But when an unexpected tragedy strikes the tight-knit Walker community, Shea’s comfortable world is upended, and she begins to wonder if the life she’s chosen is really enough for her. As she finally gives up her safety net to set out on an unexpected path, Shea discovers unsettling truths about the people and things she has always trusted most—and is forced to confront her deepest desires, fears, and secrets.

Thoughtful, funny, and brilliantly observed, The One & Only is a luminous novel about finding your passion, following your heart, and, most of all, believing in something bigger than yourself . . . the one and only thing that truly makes life worth living.

Paper & Glam Book Club - August Big Little Lies

AUGUST

Big Little Lies

Publication Date: July 29th, 2014

Page Count: 460

From the Publisher:  Big Little Lies follows three women, each at a crossroads:

Madeline is a force to be reckoned with. She’s funny and biting, passionate, she remembers everything and forgives no one. Her ex-husband and his yogi new wife have moved into her beloved beachside community, and their daughter is in the same kindergarten class as Madeline’s youngest (how is this possible?). And to top it all off, Madeline’s teenage daughter seems to be choosing Madeline’s ex-husband over her. (How. Is. This. Possible?).

Celeste is the kind of beautiful woman who makes the world stop and stare. While she may seem a bit flustered at times, who wouldn’t be, with those rambunctious twin boys? Now that the boys are starting school, Celeste and her husband look set to become the king and queen of the school parent body. But royalty often comes at a price, and Celeste is grappling with how much more she is willing to pay.

New to town, single mom Jane is so young that another mother mistakes her for the nanny. Jane is sad beyond her years and harbors secret doubts about her son. But why? While Madeline and Celeste soon take Jane under their wing, none of them realizes how the arrival of Jane and her inscrutable little boy will affect them all.

Big Little Lies is a brilliant take on ex-husbands and second wives, mothers and daughters, schoolyard scandal, and the dangerous little lies we tell ourselves just to survive.

Paper & Glam Book Club - September - Chanel BonfireSEPTEMBER

Chanel Bonfire

Publication Date: June 8th, 2013

Page Count: 304

From the Publisher: In her stunning memoir, Wendy Lawless tells the often heartbreaking tale of her unconventional upbringing with an unstable alcoholic and suicidal mother—a real-life Holly Golightly turned Mommie Dearest—and the uncommon sense of resilience that allowed her to rise above it all.

Georgann Rea didn’t bake cookies or go to PTA meetings; she wore a mink coat and always had a lit Dunhill plugged into her cigarette holder. She’d slept with too many men and a few women, and she didn’t like dogs or children. Georgann possessed the icy beauty of a Hitchcock heroine with the cold heart to match.

From living at the Dakota in 1960s Manhattan to London’s swinging town houses and beyond, Wendy Lawless and her younger sister navigated day-to-day life as their unstable and fabulously neglectful mother, Georgann, chased her delusions, suffered dramatic breakdowns, and survived suicide attempts. With clear-eyed grace and flashing wit, Lawless portrays the highs and lows of her unhinged upbringing—and how she survived her mother’s endlessly destructive search for glamour and fulfillment—in “a searing memoir that reads like a novel.”

Paper & Glam Book Club - October - Grace: A Memoir

OCTOBER

Grace: A Memoir

Publication Date: November 20th, 2012

Page Count: 416

From the Publisher: Beautiful. Willful. Charming. Blunt. Grace Coddington’s extraordinary talent and fierce dedication to her work as creative director of Vogue have made her an international icon. Known through much of her career only to those behind the scenes, she might have remained fashion’s best-kept secret were it not for The September Issue, the acclaimed 2009 documentary that turned publicity-averse Grace into a sudden, reluctant celebrity. Grace’s palpable engagement with her work brought a rare insight into the passion that produces many of the magazine’s most memorable shoots.

With the witty, forthright voice that has endeared her to her colleagues and peers for more than forty years, Grace now creatively directs the reader through the storied narrative of her life so far. Evoking the time when models had to tote their own bags and props to shoots, Grace describes her early career as a model, working with such world-class photographers as David Bailey and Norman Parkinson, before she stepped behind the camera to become a fashion editor at British Vogue in the late 1960s. Here she began creating the fantasy “travelogues” that would become her trademark. In 1988 she joined American Vogue, where her breathtakingly romantic and imaginative fashion features, a sampling of which appear in this book, have become instant classics.

Delightfully underscored by Grace’s pen-and-ink illustrations, Grace will introduce readers to the colorful designers, hairstylists, makeup artists, photographers, models, and celebrities with whom Grace has created her signature images. Grace reveals her private world with equal candor—the car accident that almost derailed her modeling career, her two marriages, the untimely death of her sister, Rosemary, her friendship with Harper’s Bazaar editor-in-chief Liz Tilberis, and her thirty-year romance with Didier Malige. Finally, Grace describes her abiding relationship with Anna Wintour, and the evolving mastery by which she has come to define the height of fashion.

Paper and Glam

Hi Stacey! That's great to hear, excellent. Shauna is the queen of the written word in my world. I'm so excited to share her with those who may not of read one of her incredible books! Love that this list fired you up, happy reading!

Sonja

Hi Lisamarie! I'm loving your blog and videos. I've been reading some of your blog archives and I find it very interesting that you used to work a ultra high-demand job. I admire that you made it a goal to get out of that situation, but I'd love to know how you managed to make time for yourself when you had this job? I work very long hours and many weekends and I can barely manage to do anything in my free time during the peak periods besides sleep. I would love to know how you coped. You've talked a little bit about self care nights...I would love to hear if you have any other tips for a busy working girl. Or thoughts on the concept of work-life balance in general. I greatly appreciate your blog and videos! Thanks for taking the time!

Paper and Glam

Hi Sonja,

Thank you so much for reading and taking a minute to send me a note. "Ultra high demand" is well-said. You're right, the years from 2012-2014 were very intense and I struggled to find a rhythm that allowed me to self-care and pursue what I loved. So much of my blog during those years is dedicated to this topic.

Self-care nights twice a week were huge, as well as waking up early (5 AM) to spend time with the Lord before things kicked off on the east coast, ensuring I got in 3 workouts a week, green juice, planning, and a weekly Sabbath to unplug, read, and take it slow were indispensable during this time. Hope this helps and I'll keep thinking about this topic and perhaps do a post or a video in the future.

Thanks again for spending some time with me and hang in there!

Patty

Thanks for the highlight of each of the 12 books. I am so excited to have found this book club. Reading more is one of my goals for 2015 and now I feel confident that I will accomplish it this year. Shauna Niequist sounds amazing I added the other two books to my goodreads list and I am excited to read more Dan Brown. I loved the DaVinci code. Looking forward to the Google hangout on the 29th! :)

Jill

Hi Lisamarie! Once again, another terrific video! I am so excited about the books you've selected for our book club! I too am intrigued by your recommendation of Shauna Niequist. I've never read anything by her, but you can bet I'm going to be checking her out now! Thank you for making the book club stickers available to all of us. I can't wait to print them out and put them in my planner! You are such an inspiration to me… I'm so happy that my sister Ginger found you and let me in on the fun! :-)
